Following along Highways 64 and 281 through the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, Panthertown Valley and Nantahala National Forest visitors and drivers can see numerous free falling and cascading waterfalls. On this page we’ve provided some information on how to get to some of the more common NC mountain waterfalls.

Along Highway 64 there are a few side roads that will take you to the Panthertown Valley region, where experienced hikers can hike through the wilderness to some of the lesser known waterfalls in NC. Schoolhouse Falls is one such set of falls. Take Cedar Creek Road off of Hwy 64 to Breedlove Road and parking is available at the dead end of the road.

Highway 281 and Highway 28 also run through Cashiers and have several gorgeous waterfalls located alongside each. Whitewater Falls near Sapphire is found along Hwy 281 and is a well marked North Carolina waterfall that is easy to get to from the highway. From Highway 28 visitors can get to Picklesiemer Rockhouse Falls. The trail up to the falls is a very easy 1 mile hike, perfect for a day of hiking and sightseeing. Hikers can take pictures and play in the deeply recessed “rock house” created by the rock outcroppings while the 40 foot waterfall free falls down.

Want to find a nice secluded, swimming hole? Many of the waterfalls in NC near Cashiers and Highlands fall into deep plunging pools, creating numerous great swimming holes. Big Laurel and Mooney Falls are two falls located on roads and trails off Highway 64. To get to these two large waterfalls you’ll need to hike the half mile trail, which takes you through a lovely wooded forest and through groves of rhododendron. Once you get to the “T” intersection and cross over the bridge you’ll see the twenty foot waterfall and the deep pool is the perfect secluded swimming spot. Also, the Cashiers Sliding Rock is a small version of the famed, Sliding Rock in Brevard, and a great natural slide and wading pool near our Cashiers Vacation Rentals. Children love this area and pictures taken here always turn out very well!

Cashiers Sliding Rock is a waterfall adventure, as the name implies, visitors start at the top, sliding down to the refreshing mountain natural pool. Travel from the crossroads of Hwys 64 and 107, south on Highway 107 approximately 1.5 miles. Turn right onto Whiteside Cove road and continue about 3 miles to a small bridge. Park in the gravel lot on your right, the trail will be visible. Further south on Highway 107 you'll find silver Run Falls, another waterfall into a swimming pond and a peaceful picnic location. Located about 4.3 miles south of the crossroads, park in the gravel area on the left side of the road. The trail is visible and offers access options of crossing the river on a fallen log, or take the trail to the right leading to a bridge across the river.

Bridal Veil Falls is perhaps one of the best known North Carolina mountain waterfalls in the region. Located in the Nantahala National Forest, just northwest of Highlands, this 45 foot waterfall’s waters flow from the Cullasaja River over an overhanging bluff creating a place where visitors can actually walk behind the falls. Drivers driving along Hwy 64 can actually see Bridal Veil Falls from the highway, and there is a nice parking area off to the side of the road for visitors to park and view the falls. On Highway 28, Upper and Lower Satulah Falls can be seen from the road.

Less than a mile away from Bridal Veil Falls you’ll find Dry Falls. Known as Upper Cullasaja Falls, Dry Falls is part of the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway and is the last major waterfall on the Cullasaja River. Dry Falls cascade for approximately half a mile and are sometimes viewable from the roadway, however drivers should pull off to enjoy a better view from the trail. If you continue a bit further, you’ll come to Cullasaja Falls, just five miles down Highway 64. Cullsaja Falls are found in one of the more dangerous areas along Highway 64, and those wanting to see the 250 foot cascading NC Waterfall should pull off the road and hike down a small trail to get a better view.
