Jackson County has over 675 miles of hiking
trails, and is home to the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, a place that abounds with natural
beauty and tons of great hiking trails. Also,
the Appalachian Trail, the 2,000 mile trail that
extends from Georgia all the way to Maine,
passes just north of Cashiers and is a great
place to enjoy a day trip and camping. Here
we've detailed some of the more popular Great
Smoky Mountains hiking trails, many of which are part of the Nantahala National Forest. The Yellow Mountain trail is a 4.8 mile trail, when hiked as a round trip, and takes you on an adventure all the way to the Old Stone and Wood Firetower, located atop a 5,127 foot mountain. Here hikers can admire the gorgeous wildflowers and natural fauna in the area, and enjoy the multiple changes in elevation. To get to Yellow Mountain take Highway 64 towards Highlands. Approximately 7.3 miles from the intersection of NC 107 and US 64 turn right on Buck Creek Road and drive approximately 2.2 miles, passing by Chestnut Hill on your right. Just right after Chestnut Hill start looking for a steep path on the right with a small wooden sign and easy steps that lead to the trail. Hiking this trail round trip typically takes about 3 to 5 hours depending. The Yellow Mountain Trail is easily accessed from our Cashiers Vacation Rental’s property.
For easy hiking NC, explore Whiteside Mountain, a two mile loop trail. Reaching an elevation of 4,940 feet, this trail is an easy to moderate hiking trail and follows a path that runs along that Eastern Continental Divide and has some spectacular views of very high cliffs, many of which are the highest in the eastern US. To get to this hiking area take US 64 towards Highlands. Approximately 4.7 miles from the intersection of NC 107 and US 64 turn left onto Whiteside Mountain Road (SR 1690) at the brown "Whiteside Mountain Trail" sign. You can park in a gravel lot just passed Wildcat Cliffs Country Club about 1.1 miles on the right. Just across from the Whiteside Mountain trail is the Devil's Courthouse Trail, a rugged, downward winding hiking trail that leads to a beautiful view, the Devil's Courthouse, for which the trail is named. Hikers should use caution as this overlook is basically nothing but very high cliffs on three sides, so children should be watched carefully. Whiteside Mountain is easily accessed from our Western North Carolina Mountain cabin rentals.
The
moderate Rock Mountain hiking trail is accessed
from the Cabins in the Laurel property. For
those seeking a longer, more strenuous hike,
continue from the summit at Rock Mountain into
Sapphire Valley to Chimney Top Mountain for a
challenging, steep adventure. The views from the
top of each trail are spectacular.
Bad Creek is one of the longer, more strenuous hikes in Cashiers and is
appropriate for skilled hikers. Taking you through the Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area, the Bad Creek trail leads hikers to a nice secluded spot on the Chattooga River. Offering tranquil settings and a challenging hike, Bad Creek is one of Cashiers larger NC hiking trails and a favorite among locals. Take NC 107 at the intersection of this highway and US 64 and drive 7 miles. Turn right on Bull Pen Road, if you notice here that you pass over the NC/SC state line, then you have gone too far). Follow Bull Pen Road for 2.7 miles and you'll see the parking area on the right just past the Fowler Creek Bridge.
Panthertown Valley is a wilderness area that many visitors usually hear about in reference to its 6,700 acres of well preserved North Carolina Mountain land and its many rock outcrops, waterfalls, quiet streams and diverse wildlife and vegetation. Here hiking and mountain biking are permitted year around and fishing is available in season. Anyone can access Panthertown Valley
from the intersection of highways 107 and 64
travel east on 64 approximately 2 miles. After approximately 2 miles turn left on Cedar Creek Road and follow it for 2.3 miles. Turn right on Breedlove Road. Follow Breedlove Road for 4 miles and you'll come to the Panthertown Valley Entrance.
Rock climbers and boulder enthusiasts love going to Granite City, a large area of gigantic boulders, just a few miles away from Cashiers. From Cashiers drive on NC 107 south 1.7 miles to Whiteside Cove Rd and then travel 6.6 miles and you'll see the trailhead on the right.
